As our team began dreaming of this place, we asked ourselves: What would it look like to create a space that fosters radical hospitality and welcomes each person, just as they are? What would it look like to create a space to explore, to create, to study, to be inspired, and to come alive in body, mind, and spirit? What would it look like to cultivate a community that is deeply present with one another and with the Topeka community and world? Cafe Quetzal seeks to cultivate these yearnings and that divine spark in each of us, all while providing you with a delicious cup of coffee and a hearty vegetarian meal.

OK, SO WHAT IS A QUETZAL?

The resplendent Quetzal is a rare bird, mysterious and hidden, one that few people in the world have seen. For years, people of Central and South America have sought them out, hoping for a glimpse of this beautiful and secret treasure of God’s creation. To look upon a Quetzal is to be a part of something miraculous and unexpected. The marvelous creature is a symbol of freedom for the ancient Maya people, and in fact, the Quetzal does not live well in captivity. It needs freedom. And don't we all really need freedom to thrive! This timeless and unique creature of God invites our curiosity and our quest for that which is beyond our fingertips; for that which is transcendent. The flight pattern of this bird is a continuous string of hills and valleys much like the inner journey of the spiritual seeker. The Quetzal inspires; it brings hope, life, freedom, and wonder.
